Montagu Park Recreation Reserve


Camping Information

Welcome to the Montagu Park Recreation Reserve.  The camping area is open all year, excluding October when the park is closed for annual maintenance.  During the Peak Season (1 November to 30 April) an onsite caretaker oversees the Reserve and fees can be paid direct to the Caretaker on site.  


Camping Fees

Council sets the fees for the Montagu Park Recreation Reserve camping ground each year 1 November. Fees for the current season are listed at the bottom of this page. Please note all prices include GST.

The Peak Season On Site Caretaker can manage bookings and payments. 

From 1 May to 30 September, the Montagu Park Recreation Reserve can be used for camping, however there is no on site caretaker and services are reduced.   Camping is limited to 2 weeks out of season, and reduced fees apply.  Payment out of season should be made at the Council offices, 33 Goldie Street Smithton, or by phone on 03 6452 4800. 

Camping is not permitted annually during October to enable regular site maintenance.

 Conditions of Entry

Site reservations are to be made with the on-site caretaker during the Peak Season prior to occupying a site as it is necessary to seek site identification and pay fees.

  • In Peak Season campers must check in with the Caretaker at Site 28 (near boat ramp) prior to selecting a site and setting up camp
  • Campers are to vacate their site by 11am on the day of departure. All camping equipment is to be removed from the area when vacating the site or charges will apply
  • Unpaid site fees entitle Council to payment on demand if requested
  • Council reserves the right for dispute resolution on payment of fees
  • The long term occupation of any site is restricted to one family being immediate family members, i.e. Two adults and up to 4 dependent children.
  • The occupation of any site is restricted to being within the defined boundaries of 10m².  If additional space is require then an additional site fee will be charged per night
  • Camping is not permitted within 10 metres of the sheds, toilets or barbecue areas or within 3 metres of the fire break surrounding the boundary
  • The erection of any annexes or temporary structures is to be in accordance with Council’s Guidelines for Annexes (see below)
  • No excavations or vegetation disturbance is permitted
  • Campers are required to keep the immediate area around their site tidy at all times
  • All garbage must be wrapped, including disposable nappies
  • Cleaning of muttonbirds within the park is not permitted
  •  Pets are to be on a leash at all times and must not be left unaccompanied.  Faeces are to be removed
  • Alcohol is not to be consumed outside the immediate camp area
  • No generators to be used between 11pm to 7am
  • Speed limit on site is strictly 10km/h
  • All site occupiers have the right to the peaceful and quiet enjoyment of their site.  Unruly behaviour and excessive noise will not be tolerated.  Offenders will be requested to leave the camping area immediately by an authorised Council representative
  • Council or a delegated officer reserves the right to remove any campers and/or their possessions from the Reserve without any notice at any time


Caravan, Motorhome and Annexe Guidelines

Within the Reserve, the only acceptable form or structure connected to a caravan is a prefabricated demountable annexe.

Annexes constructed in the same manner or style and of similar materials to caravans or of canvas materials, and capable of easy removal, may be erected within the Reserve. Such annexes shall conform to the following:

  • Caravans & motorhomes using the site must be maintained in a safe and healthy condition
  • Annexes are only permitted where they are associated with, or attached to a registrable motor vehicle
  • Annexe size is limited to a maximum of 18m2 and must not be longer or higher than the caravan or motorhome
  • All annexes are to be safely secured to the associated vehicle and the ground. Fixing to trees is not permitted
  • The annexe is to be located entirely within the designated camping site
  • All annexes are to be removed at the end of the designated Summer camping season
  • The final decision on the compliance of any annexe is at the discretion of Council management
